Xarelto is a blood thinner used to prevent blood clots in persons with atrial fibrillation. Xarelto has been aggressively marketed by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals (Bayer) and Johnson & Johnson as the next generation of blood thinners intended to replace Coumadin (warfarin). Although not without some minor inconveniences, Coumadin is a tried and true blood thinning medication. Physicians have a tremendous amount of experience prescribing Coumadin. Coumadin has been prescribed throughout the world for over fifty years. Physicians are able to effectively monitor the level of Coumadin in blood to ensure it is at a therapeutic dose for their individual patients. On the other hand, physicians cannot properly monitor the levels of Xarelto in blood. And while Xarelto is touted for its alleged convenience as a single daily-dose pill for which no blood monitoring is necessary, the drug comes with significant safety risks, namely uncontrollable internal bleeding. Unlike Coumadin, there is no known antidote to stop or reverse a Xarelto-induced internal bleed. If a patient on Coumadin develops a bleed, a doctor can administer vitamin K or other blood clotting factors to stop the bleeding. In contrast, Bayer and Johnson & Johnson never developed an antidote to reverse a Xarelto-induced bleed and for years failed to warn physicians and patients that no antidote existed. Our firm is currently handling cases involving individuals who have suffered a bleeding event while on Xarelto. We have significant experience pursuing claims on behalf of persons injured by anticoagulation medications and just successfully resolved a group of cases involving another new generation blood thinner.
